Ohio State's Journey to Glory: National Champions Once Again
Ohio State's journey to the College Football Playoff hasn't been easy, starting with a shocking loss to Michigan at the end of the regular season. But the Buckeyes turned their season around in spectacular fashion, winning 34-23 over Notre Dame on Monday night to claim their first national championship since the 2014-15 season.
The 14-2 Buckeyes dominated the first half and Jeremiah Smith and Quinson Judkins made great plays. Smith carried it into the end zone for a touch down while Judkins carried it for two more touchdowns that put Ohio State ahead 21-7 at the half.
Buckeyes running back Judkins fumbled the ball in the third quarter and drove for 75 yards before scoring on a 70-yard touchdown run that put the Buckeyes ahead 28-7.
Notre Dame (14-2) scored two immediate touchdowns thanks to quarterback Riley Leonard and receiver Jaden Greenhouse, but the men fell behind 28-21.
But Ohio State held firm. Quarter back Will Howard had a normal day and scored two touchdowns on 17 of 21 passing and passed for 231 yards with no interceptions. The humility he showed kept his Buckeyes ahead.
Leonard also played brilliantly for Notre Dame, throwing for 295 passing yards and three touchdowns. Still, defensive problems eventually caught up with the Irish.
In the end, the Buckeyes' offense and Ohio State's resilience under head coach Ryan Day made the championship what any team wanted or expected, with the confetti falling as a memorable ending to a season.
